Purposeful Management Skills Workshop
Managing people is the activity of getting people to do what you want them to do. In short, management is about communicating. Successful management is getting people to do what you want willingly and well - this means communicating successfully. We all know how to communicate. We begin the moment we are born. But what happens when we are not effective - when our communication efforts fail? When communication is ineffective, it is usually because we have forgotten to communicate with intent - with purpose.
The Purposeful Management Skills Series teaches participants how to build on existing knowledge and skills, and develop the ability to communicate and manage with purpose.
Process
The workshops are highly interactive, flexible, and guided by participants' interests and needs:
- The first workshop in the series is typically a needs assessment to identify the communication and managerial topics and priorities the group will work with in the series;
- Resulting topics reflect the needs and interests of the organizational team;
- A communication styles survey is optional as part of the series;
- Topic possibilities include delegating, providing performance feedback, motivating employees, active listening, resolving conflict, setting goals, and customer service;
- Workshops are designed to fit within the time frames (1 ½ to 2 ½ hours) of a typical management/staff meeting. They may also be scheduled in the evening hours;
- The series is offered in blocks of six sessions, with additional sessions optional;
- Sessions are typically scheduled one month apart to provide continuity, consistency, and reinforcement as skills are developed;
- Each workshop builds on and integrates previous sessions, and the skills developed between sessions.
Outcomes
The Purposeful Management Skills Series is an ongoing series of 1 ½ to 2 ½ hour monthly programs designed to enable business leaders and managers at all levels to:
- Develop awareness and understanding of existing abilities;
- Increase their knowledge and skills in proven effective management practices, and the communication process;
- Enhance managerial and communication talents through the use of situations, and issues drawn from their own workplace and/or life experiences;
- Develop new skills through shared experiences, analysis of existing abilities, and focused practice;
- Gain confidence in their ability to communicate and manage effectively through the purposeful use of existing skills, and the development of new abilities;
- Expand skill in drawing on analyzing their own, and workshop teammates, past experiences to resolve current issues and problems.
